History of East Pacific Names: ___________________________________________________ Tropical cyclones were not named in the Eastern North Pacific until 1960. Four sets were drafted that year, but initially the procedure followed the same pattern as the Western Pacific, i.e., if the last storm in a given year were the "K" name, the first one the next year would be given the "L" name from the same set. However, in 1965 the decision was made to cycle the lists annually and begin with "A" every year just like the Atlantic. The original four sets were re-cycled through 1977, but the new male/female name list was initiated in 1978. This list initially contained four sets, thus the 1978 set was used again in 1982. However, that year it was decided to expand the list to six sets (to match the Atlantc), so two new sets were employed in 1983 and 1984, and the 1979 set was then used again in 1985. Few names have been retired in this region. FELICIA replaces FEFA for 1997, and ISRAEL replaces ISMAEL for 2001. Other than these new names, the only names in the Six-Year List (since 1978) that have not been used as a storm name (and the next year they'll be up for use) are: Todd (1999), Veronica (1999), Wiley (1999), York (1999), Zelda (1999), Vicente (2000), Willa (2000), Wallis (2001) ** - These storms were named, but later reduced to tropical depression status during post-season analysis. ++ - These storms were classed as tropical storms in the post-season summary article, but are not listed in the Official Best Tracks file, apparently having since been reduced to tropical depressions. However, according to the copy of the official list of names posted by Jack Beven on the NHC Web Site, it is spelled DOLORES in the set for for 1997. (I can't help from thinking this variant spelling originated simply as a typo somewhere along the line.) Similarly, KIRSTEN in 1966 became KRISTEN in 1970, and then back to KIRSTEN in 1974. Also, DALILIA in 1983 and 1989 was changed slightly to DALILA for 1995. ***************************************************************************** SUPPLEMENT - CENTRAL PACIFIC (HAWAIIAN REGION) CYCLONES Tropical cyclones are infrequent in the Central North Pacific (between 140W and the Dateline). Even with complete satellite coverage, an average of only 1 to 2 per year are seen to develop in this region. Usually, around 3 to 4 storms from the Eastern Pacific will move into this region; and on very rare occasions, a visitor from the Western Pacific will cross the Dateline moving eastward. In these cases, the original name is retained in warnings issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu. For cyclones forming in the Central Pacific region, the history of naming has been as follows: ** - storm moved west of Dateline to become typhoon or tropical storm in the Western North Pacific Prior to 1957 - In a couple of cases, storms were given Hawaiian names: Hiki (1950), Kanoa (1957) Late 1957 through late 1970's - Storms forming in this region were given names "borrowed" from the typhoon naming list: 1957 - Nina 1972 - June, Ruby ** 1959 - Clara, Dot, Wanda 1974 - Olive 1967 - Sarah ** 1976 - Kate 1970 - Dot 1978 - Susan (Between 1959 and 1967, there were some tropical storms in this region, but none were assigned names.) Beginning in the early 1980's, Hawaiian names were reinstated for storms forming in the Central North Pacific, with the first ones being issued in 1982 (no storms formed in this region in 1979, 1980, or 1981): 1982 - Akoni, Ema, Hana, Iwa 1990 - Aka ** 1984 - Keli, Lala, Moke 1992 - Ekeka **, Hali, Iniki 1985 - Nele 1993 - Keoni ** 1987 - Oka, Peke ** 1994 - Li **, Mele, Nona 1988 - Uleki **, Wila 1997 - Oliwa **, Paka ** The naming list consists of four sets of 12 names (using only the letters of the Hawaiian alphabet), and all 48 names are to be used before repeating any storm names. The names of the destructive Hawaiian hurricanes, IWA and INIKI, have been retired and replaced with IO and IOLANA, respectively.
